Wednesday Dept. Meeting Agenda/Docs

Dear Colleagues:

Below and attached is the agenda for THIS Wednesday's all-department meeting.  I am still seeking a room to hold us--stay tuned for the announcement of WHERE.  Please note that we are going to try out a new start and end time for department meetings--one that matches the course period our meeting time covers:  3:55-5:20 p.m

My goal will always be to get us out by 5 p.m., but I don't think that will happen this week.  Also, in order to complete this year the Strategic Plan we began to create at the Havening, we will need to have more time at our disposal this Spring.

Other attachments to this message include the minutes of our last meeting along with the various LX forms listed on the agenda.  Please come with any final questions ready to go.  Also, you will find attached a document that outlines on one page the newly proposed and old versions of the Professional Writing minor;  this will let you compare them easily--I should say contrast them.

On an unrelated note:  please join us for a brown bag lunch with candidate James Berry from 11:30-noon in 432 tomorrow, Tuesday.  He is an ADVERB freak!  And a big Jane Austen fan.

Havening IV Agenda and Preparatory Readings

Dear Colleagues:

Havening IV
Friday, September 3, 2010
8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Myrick/Hixon EcoCenter

The department’s annual Havening (retreat) is nearly upon us!  Lunch, snacks, and caffeine will be provided (including veggie and vegan options). A map to the EcoCenter is available as a link when you scroll down on the following page:  http://www.myrickecopark.com/_mgxroot/page_contact.html.  Below is a guide to what you can expect and what you need to prepare (see attachments) in order to make this day as productive as possible.

Please RSVP to Diana (johnson.dia2@uwlax.edu) by Monday, Aug. 30, so that we can plan how much food to order.

Best wishes for a relaxing close to your summer,

Susan

Guide to the Havening Agenda

I.
APR Self-Study Discussion and Strategic Planning Session
§ APR Self-Study:  This is the department’s Academic Program Review (APR) year.  Our external reviewer, Bernard Duyfhuizen (Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Professor of English at UW-Eau Claire), will be visiting the department this fall.  At the Havening, we will prepare for this process and for Duffy’s visit by discussing the department’s APR Self-Study Report that I submitted for the Dean’s review, along with the correlating “Unit Data Sheet” of department information (both files are attached to this message).  You are expected to read both of these documents before the Havening.  I will provide a brief presentation of key issues in the report and then open things up for discussion:  What seems particularly important to you in the report?  Was anything inadvertently left out or left incomplete? Does anything surprise you?

§ Strategic Planning:  The APR process provides an excellent opportunity for the department to look back over the past six years and take stock.  Furthermore, the APR report provides a comprehensive context within which to consider our short- and long-term goals as a department.  (You will notice that in the APR Self-Study I named lack of coordinated strategic planning as our department’s greatest weakness.) Using the results of a brief survey that all of you will take this and/or next week (watch for instructions via e-mail), I will lead a strategic planning session through which we will create and prioritize short- and long-term goals for the department.

To prepare:
§ Read the APR Self-Study (attached)

§ Read the Unit Data Sheet (attached)

§ Take the strategic planning survey by Wed., Sept. 1 (a link to the survey will be sent to you via e-mail)

II.
ESL Writers and Plagiarism:  A Department Discussion
Given the growing numbers of international students at UW-L, as well as in the Rhetoric and Writing major (through our China program), it is becoming more and more likely that all of us will encounter ESL learners not only in our Gen Ed classes but also in our upper-level classes.  Haixia, Ryan, and Sharon S. will lead us in a discussion of some scholarship (approx. 20 pages of excerpts) on the practical and theoretical issues relating to ESL writers and plagiarism.

  To prepare:
§  Read the collection of critical excerpts titled “ESL Writers and Plagiarism” (attached as one .pdf document)

III.
General Education Assessment
Just as with last year, all instructors teaching ENG 110 and/or an ENG 200-level course this fall must participate in Gen Ed Assessment.  At the Havening, the Department Assessment Committee (me, Bryan, Darci, David, Peg, and Ryan) will present its proposal for this year’s Gen Ed assessment.  The department will review, discuss, and consider for adoption the Committee-endorsed SLO (student learning outcome), assignment, and rubric.  Also, Darci will review the department-approved plan for a three-pronged, department-initiated assessment of ENG 110 this year.

  To prepare:
§  Meditate J

English in the news

Dear Colleagues:

We all have Diana to thank for the idea of getting Rob’s Skype teaching reported to UW-L’s public relations office—as well as for coordinating Rob and Terry Wirkus to help make the Skype sessions happen.  Thank you, Diana, for that and all your work!

Below is a note from Rob explaining that he’ll be featured in the news on Channels 8 and 19 this evening.  Rob is still in Estonia until at least the end of this week.

Best,
Susan

Subject: teaching via skype

Dear Susan,

I just wanted to let you know that teaching via Skype has been going well thus far. After class today, channel 8 (wxow.com) and channel 19 (wkbt.com) came to the class and interviewed the students and me about the experience. It will be on the news tonight. There is also a story about it in tomorrow's Tribune. Here is the link to the story:

I have a flight scheduled for Friday, so hopefully I will be back next week, but I will let you know definitively on Friday.

Rob

Department Meeting Wed. Feb. 3

Dear Colleagues:

Our first department meeting of the semester will be sandwiched between this week’s on-campus interview activities.  The agenda is below, and relevant supporting documents are attached.  Note that we will discuss and perhaps vote on a proposed new course, ENG 112, College Writing I Advance Placement.  The Writing Committee has been discussing, researching, and writing this proposal for at least the past two terms.  There are various documents related to the proposal attached here, including

a rationale for the course,
  • the LX forms for creating a new course (112) and for creating a new Gen Ed course (112),
  • the LX forms for revising ENG 110 relative to the 112 proposal, and
  • data pertaining to AP exams exemptions from 110 (read the rationale for an explanation of how that relates the the ENG 112 proposal).
The Writing Committee will present this information at our meeting and field any questions.
